The "Esel-Initiative" (German for "Donkey Initiative") was founded in the summer of 1995 with the aim of relieving single mothers in Eritrea of the hardship of carrying water and helping them take care of themselves and their families. In 2007, the association added a second project in the Himalaya region. More
In Eritrea, the labor of carrying water lies on the shoulders of women and girls only. The journey is time-consuming, so girls often can not go to school. The hard work usually causes life-long back damage as well.
